Course Description
This course is designed for persons seeking accreditation as a Workplace Health and Safety Officer (WHSO), as well as employers and managers wanting a thorough understanding of the WHS Legislation and practical OH&S measures for managing safety in the workplace.
To become an accredited WHSO, participants are required to achieve competency in both the Core Modules and an Elective Module (Services, Industrial or Construction).
This course satisfies the requirements of training as outlined in the Workplace Health & Safety Act 1995 QLD for WHSO’s.

Target Audience 
An employer must appoint a qualified person as a Workplace Health and Safety Officer (WHSO) if 30 or more workers are normally employed at the Workplace. A Principal Contractor (PC) must appoint a WHSO if thirty or more persons work at a workplace during any 24 hour period or if the PC has built more than 30 domestic premises during the previous years. This course is also suitable for supervisors and managers who have a responsibility for the safety of workers.
Course Content 
To provide participants with the necessary knowledge and skills to
| · | Referencing and understanding the Queensland Government’s current Workplace Health and Safety Legislation and Standards and related material |
| · | Assisting Queensland Government workplace health and safety officials; |
| · | Preparing workplace health and safety reports; |
| · | Establishing appropriate educational programs; |
| · | Investigating work injuries, work caused illnesses and dangerous events; |
| · | Consulting with workers, employers and statutory bodies. |
Course Outcomes 
Upon completion, participants will be able to competently:
| · | To tell the employer or principal contractor about the overall state of health and safety at the workplace; |
| · | To conduct inspections at the workplace to identify any hazards and unsafe or unsatisfactory workplace health and safety conditions and practice; |
| · | To report to the employer or principal contractor any hazard or unsafe or unsatisfactory workplace health and safety practice identified during inspections; |
| · | To establish appropriate educational programs in workplace health and safety; |
| · | To investigate, or assist in the investigation of, all work injuries, work caused illnesses and dangerous events at the workplace; |
| · | To help inspectors in the performance of the inspectors’ duties; |
| · | If any work injury, work caused illness, dangerous event or immediate risk to workplace health and safety at the workplace happens – to report the injury, illness, event or risk to the employer or principal contractor; |
| · | Another function prescribed under a regulation. |
Course Requirements
This course has both theoretical and practical components, and is conducted in accordance with criteria set by the Division of Workplace Health and Safety.
Functioning as a Workplace Health and Safety Officer – Core Modules must be successfully completed before a participant can progress to the appropriate Elective Modules for their industry.
Award Participants who demonstrate competency by achieving a 75% pass mark, or more, for a theory examination will receive a Division of Training and Industrial Relations Assessment Report.
Time restrictions apply upon completion of Functioning as a Workplace Health and Safety Officer – Core Modules. Individuals must complete an industry specific Elective within six (6) months in order to gain their Workplace Health and Safety Officer certification.

Assessments & Awards 
Participants who demonstrate competency by passing both the theory and practical assessments will receive a Statement of Attainment ‘Course in Functioning as a Workplace Health and Safety Officer – Units –WHSO/01, WHSO/02, WHSO/03’ issued by OHSA as partial fulfillment of the Qualification.
Participants will also receive an Assessment Report – (Division of Workplace Health and Safety).

Conditions of registration & payment for this course 
Conditions
OHSA Occupational Health Services Australia has a fair and equitable Refund Policy guaranteeing the refund of fees to course participants under reasonable circumstances. The management guarantees OHSA’s sound financial position and safeguards clients’ fees until used for learning and assessment.
An organisation or individual may substitute another participant prior to course commencement date at no cost should the nominated person be unable to attend as long as notification is provided in writing prior to commencement of the course. Registration may be transferred to another course or cancelled at no cost up to fifteen working days prior to a course providing notification is in writing.
Transfers to another course or cancellations made between ten and fifteen working days (3 weeks) prior to the commencement of the course must be in writing and will attract a 20% administration fee.
Transfers to another course or cancellations made between five and ten working days (2 weeks) prior to the commencement of the course must be in writing and will attract a 35% administration fee. For cancellations or transfers made inside five working days prior to the commencement of the course, no refund will be issued, however a substitute may attend the course as per Item 1 above. No refunds will be made after the commencement of the course unless the participant provides a medical certificate or can demonstrate extreme personal hardship. In this case, the participant may transfer to a subsequent course at the discretion of management. OHSA reserves the right to cancel or postpone a course to an alternative date. All registered participants affected by such changes will be offered the opportunity to transfer to the next available course program or receive a full refund. Note: Bookings on courses are not guaranteed until payment is received.
Payment
Full payment is required before commencement of training, unless prior arrangements have been made with OHSA Occupational Health Services Australia management or accounts department.
Full payment for courses must be made when submitting your registration request, invoices will be issued to persons/organisations who are paying on behalf of students and must be paid before a student is officially registered.

Proof of Identity Requirement
Participants in accredited training modules must provide proof of identity to the responsible person at OHSA Occupational Health Services Australia, who will sight and verify the evidence on the first day of training, record the type of evidence provided on the attendance sheet and sign the declaration.
