Course description ...

This unit of competency covers the functions required to undertake basic rigging to meet minimum training and assessment standards for the purposes of certification.

This unit involves planning, preparing and completing rigging work.

Trainees will need to attend initial training for 32-40 hours then return to industry on a training plan and logbook to gain 120 (minimum of 40 hours) rigging experience before they can submit for assessment for the National license. The assessment is typically conducted over a nominal 4-6 hours.

Target Audience ...


Workers entering or in industry who are working with and are / will be directing the load shifting operations of cranes to do steel and building erections.

Workers who wish to operate self erecting tower cranes are advised to gain a basic riggers licence prior to becoming a self erecting tower crane operator.

Course Content ...


Candidates will be trained in the following:

  • Movement of plant and equipment
  • Steel erection
  • Particular hoists
  • Placement of pre-cast concrete
  • Safety nets and static lines
  • Mast climbers
  • Perimeter safety screens and shutters
  • Cantilevered crane loading platforms

1. Plan and prepare work
   1.1 Plan the job
   1.2 Select, inspect and if necessary repair material & tools
   1.3 Co-ordinate transport of equipment to site as necessary


2. Complete rigging work
    2.1  Prepare site for rigging work
    2.2  Move loads
    2.3  Plan and secure load
    2.4  Ensure continuing stability
    2.5 Dismantle & remove loadshifting equipment


 

Course Outcomes ...


Trainees will gain the knowledge and skills to function as a Basic Rigger to complete the above tasks working with various types of cranes and other plant.

Assessments & Award ...


After training and a successful assessment trainees will be given a Statement of Attainment by OHSA and will receive a National Licence from the Department of Industrial Relations Queensland.

 

Course Requirements ...


OHSA will provide each trainee with a safety helmet, gloves, high visibility vest, safety glasses, a clipboard, a whistle and training materials.
Trainees will provide safety boots, work clothes and can bring their own harness.

OHSA will provide general training gear e.g. harnesses, slings, ropes, chains, etc. 

Entry Requirements ...


Adequate numeracy, literacy and English communication skills to do simple calculations, write legibly and be understood.

Have sufficient physical strength and dexterity to attach slings, etc, direct loads and place loads and have good vision and hearing.
