Course description ...

This course has been designed to introduce surface coal employees to the relevant legislation, accepted practices, and safety procedures that are used on surface coal mining sites in order to create and maintain a safe and healthy working environment. 

The course focus is the health and safety of all people who work on, visit, or supply materials and services to a mine site. It provides a foundation of basic knowledge and skills which you will build on through your site-specific induction and task specific training.


OHSA is a Training Provider licensed by the Mining Industry Skills Centre to deliver this course.

For an extra one hour on the second day of the course students can obtain a Metalliferous Mining passport . (refer to codes adjacent).

  • Fire Fighting and Prevention;
  • Summing Up - The Work Process Model.

Course Outcomes ...


Upon completion, participants will be able to:

  • Have an understanding of the coal mining process;
  • Understand laws that regulate safety and health on coal mines;
  • Understand information on and examples of safety devices and PPE typically used on coal mines;
  • Understand risk management practices for typical hazards encountered on coal mines;
  • Understand typical isolation and tagging of equipment and when to use documentation such as work permits and defect reports;
  • Understand typical traffic procedures that apply on coal mines;
  • Understand information dealing with emergency situations that might arise on a coal mine site;
  • Understand basic first aid procedures;
  • Understand basic information about fires and fire fighting/prevention strategies;
  • Understand environmental and cultural heritage obligations under the law.

 

Assessments & Award ...


Participants who demonstrate competency by passing both the theory and practical assessments will receive a Statement of Attainment in completion of GI0 Course in Generic Induction to Coal Mining - Core.

A temporary passport with the holders photo will be issued upon course completion and MI Skills will send out a plastic passport card with the holders photograph. The passport expires after 2 years whereby the participant is required to complete a 1 day refresher course.

 

Course Requirements ...


Participants must provide photographic identification and wear closed shoes for the fire fighting exercise. 

Entry Requirements ...


Participants should have sufficient literacy and numeracy to read and comprehend instructions for safety at the workplace.

Participants will need sufficient physical ability to attend a two-day classroom based course, perform CPR floor demonstration exercises and lift and carry an approx. 10kg fire extinguisher to extinguish a fire.
