Gold Coast Mining Summit

The Work for Queensland Summit was held on the Gold Coast on August 2011. Mining Executives and Mayors from high unemployment areas attended this important event. Senior executives from resource companies met with officials from the Gold Coast City Council, Sunshine Coast Regional Council, Fraser Coast Regional Council, Whitsunday Regional Council and Cairns Regional Council at the Gold Coast Institute of TAFE in Southport. There were also Federal government representatives at this meeting.

Mining 101 courses

The summit discussed pressing issues such as the mining 101 courses for Queenslanders looking to work in the mining industry. The Premier Anna Bligh said the Summit was about matching jobs with Queenslanders and that the government was focusing on areas that are facing higher levels of unemployment.

“I called this high level summit because we have significant numbers of Queenslanders, particularly in some regional areas, out of work and yet the mining industry is facing a skills shortage,” said Ms Bligh.

Ms bligh went along to say “We want to find solutions that mean all Queenslanders are given the chance to be involved in our State’s bright future."

She was also quoted as saying “Queensland is on the cusp of a huge resources boom with our new LNG industry and demand from China and India for our coal and other resources – we need to make sure that as many Queenslanders as possible can take these jobs.”

RESOURCES 101

“Resources 101″ courses will be offered to all Queenslanders by the State Government to meet skills shortages in the resource sector. Projections have shown the resources industry could create a further 38,000 jobs over the next four years.
Premier Anna Bligh wishes to assist the mining industry to fill labour shortfalls with Queenslanders, ahead of mine workers from interstate.

Ms Bligh hopes to inform thousands of unemployed people from Cairns, Hervey Bay and the Gold Coast about the mining boom and convince them to tap into this sector. The Government will set up a co-ordination role to identify the many job opportunities within the mining sector and help link unemployed Queenslanders to these high-paying jobs. This initiative will include mining training for people to aid them to get work in the industry.

Ms Bligh stated that “Right now we’ve got big mining projects hungry for labour, hungry for skills and we’ve got parts of Queensland with higher unemployment,”

Ms Bligh went on to say.“I think the size and scale of what we are on the cusp of is hard for people to grasp … in the gas industry alone in the next three years, three companies will between them spend $55 billion.”
