The purpose of the RIIWHS601D – Establish and maintain the WHS management system (formerly known as the ‘G7’ Course and previously known by the unit code MNCG1007) training program, is to provide participants with the knowledge, skills and ability to establish and maintain the WHS management systems in the resources and infrastructure industry.

The course is applicable to both surface and underground coal mining operations and is not limited only to persons wishing to become Site Senior Executives (SSE’s). It is also suited to other professionals already working within the resources industry who wish to further their knowledge of, and who would benefit from a solid understanding of WHS Management Systems in their current roles, for example: department managers, superintendents, engineers, geologists, and health & safety professionals.

The ‘G7’ course is designed for those people working in the Resources and Infrastructure Industry in roles such as Safety Managers; Site Safety Representatives, Open Cut Examiners; Site Senior Executives; or members of Management Teams. It is also suited to other people already working within the resources industry who wish to further their knowledge of, and who would benefit from a solid understanding of WHS Management Systems in their current roles, for example: Department Managers, Superintendents, Engineers, Geologists, Project Managers and Health & Safety personnel.

As of the 30th June 2011 the Coal Mining Safety and Health Advisory Committee determined that all persons appointed as a site senior executive (SSE) under the Coal Mining Safety and Health Act 1999 are required to demonstrate to the Board of Examiners their knowledge of the current Queensland coal mining legislation by undertaking a written examination (“the SSE examination”) before appointment to the role in accordance with section 54(1) of the Act.

In addition they must possess a qualification in risk management in either:

RIIRIS601D, commonly known as ‘G3’ AND RIIWHS601D, commonly known as ‘G7’
MINE7033 or
GMIRM
Holding a Notice from the Board of Examiners of compliance with this requirement is a prerequisite to taking up duties as an SSE. This includes ‘acting’ as a SSE.

Also as of the 30th June 2011 all persons appointed to a SSE role must either:

Hold a Notice from the Board of Examiners that they have successfully demonstrated to the Board their knowledge of Queensland coal mining legislation by undertaking a written examination on the Coal Mining Safety and Health Act 1999 and the Coal Mining Safety and Health Regulation 2001 (“the current legislation”); or
Hold a Notice from the Board of Examiners that they are exempt from sitting the SSE examination.

This unit covers the establishment and maintenance of the WHS management system in resources and infrastructure industries. It includes establishing and maintaining:

  • the framework of the system;
  • participative arrangements for the management of WHS;
  • procedures for identifying hazard, assessing risk and treating risks;
  • organisational procedures for dealing with unplanned incidents;
  • a WHS training program;
  • a system for WHS records;
  • planning and preparing for the implementation of the system; and
  • evaluation of the organisation’s WHS system and related policies, procedures and programs.

The 5 Days (40 hours) course will also require submission of a portfolio of workplace evidence including Pre-course research items AND Post-course workplace projects.

It is recommended that students have the following:

  • Standard 11 Generic OH&S Mining Induction;
  • Mining Supervisor (S123): RIIRIS301D Apply risk management processes, or equivalent;
  • G2 Risk Facilitator: RIIRIS402D Carry out the risk management processor, or equivalent;
  • Minimum 5 years experience in a management position within the resources sector;
  • Access to a resources worksite;
  • Access to internet and relevant legislation, policy and procedures, safety and health management system, SOP’s, JSA’s, OEM’s etc
