WHS Legislation requires that employers cannot ‘assume an employee is competent’. A Verification of Competency (VOC) assessment assists the employer to determine that the skill level of an operator is appropriate for the plant and task. It is often used to satisfy project requirements and pre-employment competency checks.

OHSA can verify the competencies of your people in a range of High-Risk Licence and Non-High-Risk operations. Nationally Recognised Units of Competency, Codes of Practice, Standards, Original Equipment Manufacturer’s Manuals, Relevant Legislation, and Company Procedures are used to determine an Operator’s Competency.

This unit of competency covers the skills required to competently operate an EWP to meet WHSQ and industry safe operating principles and methods, EWP processes and procedures, workplace communications, safe and responsible environmental practices, the scope and limitations of equipment, load specifications, designs and functions of various EWPS, pre- and post-safety checks and maintenance, obtaining work permits and licenses, etc.

This process is available to operators who currently hold a current Boom Type Elevating Work Platform (over 11m) High Risk License and need their competency verified.

Candidates will be required to demonstrate their competency in the following areas:

• Hazard Identification and response methods;
• Methods of nonverbal communication;
• Understanding and following instructions;
• Appropriate selection and use of;
• Controls & features

Settings and operational techniques for the specific settings, specific terrain and weather conditions in day or night without causing damage to machinery, equipment, load, person, property or environment (including soils and property structures).

• Trainees will provide their own safety boots and work clothes.
• Once verified, candidates will receive an OHSA Verification of Competency Statement.
