WHS LAW REQUIRES ALL HSR’S TO RECEIVE THIS 5 DAY COURSE TRAINING WITHIN 28 DAYS OF ELECTION – DON’T GET CAUGHT OUT !!

The HSR training course provides participants with the skills and knowledge to enable them to fulfill the role of Health and Safety Representatives (HSR) as detailed in section 72 of the Work Health and Safety Act 2011 and s.21 of the Regulation 2011. OHSA is licensed to deliver this government-approved course. HSR’s are then entitled to receive 1 day refresher training every 12 months. We can also deliver in-house courses on-site.

The aims of this course are to provide HSRs and deputy HSRs, elected under the new WHS legislation, with information and skills relating to:

• Interpreting the WH&S legislative framework and its relationship to the HSR
• Identifying key parties and their legislative obligations and duties
• Establishing representation in the workplace
• Participating in consultation and issue resolution
• Representing members in the WHS risk management process undertaken by the PCBU
• Issuing a Provisional Notice (PIN) and directing the Cessation of Work.

The nominated course completion time is an indication only.

This 5 day course covers training required of a student in their role as an elected HSR.  Training consists of written answers and practical exercises in the following:

• undertake workplace inspections
• review the circumstances of workplace incidents
• accompany a WHSQ inspector during an inspection
• represent the work group in health and safety matters
• attend an interview about health and safety matters with a worker from the work group (with the consent of the worker)
• request that a health and safety committee be established
• participate in a health and safety committee
• monitor compliance measures
• investigate work health and safety complaints from work group members
• inquire into any risk to the health and safety of workers in the work group
• issue provisional improvement notices and direct a worker to cease unsafe work (where the HSR has completed the approved training).

The role of a HSR is generally limited to their own work group unless:

• there is a serious risk to health or safety (created by an immediate hazard) affecting workers from another work group
• a worker in another work group asks for the HSR’s assistance, and the HSR for that other work group is found to be unavailable.

Participants should have sufficient literacy and numeracy to read and comprehend instructions for safety at the workplace. Participants will need sufficient physical ability to attend a five (5) day classroom based course.

As per Workplace Health and Safety Queensland’s conditions, participants will need to supply 100 points of identification for the course.  This may include the following documents;

• Australian Drivers Licence/Passport/Qld issued 18+ Card
• Medicare Card
• Financial institution debit/credit card.

(A copy won’t be taken of the debit/credit card but it will need to be sighted.  A copy will be taken of the other documents)

Failing to be able to provide these documents on day 1 may result in the participant not being entitled to attend training.
