KEY COMPLIANCE DETAILS:

G2 Risk Facilitator – RIIRIS402E Carry out the Risk Management Processes

Take your site safety leadership to the next level with the G2 Risk Facilitator course. Designed for supervisors, Open Cut Examiners (OCEs), Safety Advisors, and Statutory Position Holders, this program equips you with the advanced skills required to lead, implement, and audit risk management processes in Queensland’s coal and metalliferous mining industries.

OHSA’s training ensures you are genuinely site-ready and compliant with Queensland mining legislation. You won’t just learn the theory; you will learn how to actively facilitate risk assessments, apply the Hierarchy of Controls, and develop real-world safety documentation, including JSEAs, WRACs, and Bow-Tie assessments.

Because this course requires the submission of a post-course portfolio of evidence from your actual site, employers and Site Senior Executives (SSEs) trust that an OHSA qualification means you can execute these critical safety processes in the real world.

KEY COURSE FEATURES & OUTCOMES

  • Advanced Risk Facilitation: Learn to plan, scope, and lead risk management processes, identifying unacceptable risks before they escalate.
  • Practical Site Application: Master the implementation of hazard treatments, conduct safety inspections, and write actionable audit reports based on actual site conditions.
  • The 5-Day Supervisor Package: Need more than just your G2? Supervisors can fast-track their statutory requirements by choosing our comprehensive 5-day package, which includes Standard 11, Mining Supervisor S123, and G2, delivered over 5 consecutive days, Monday to Friday every second week.
  • Online/Distance Learning Mode: No longer employed at a resource project or unable to access site documentation? Contact us to discuss completing this course via our flexible online/distance learning mode G2 Risk Facilitator | ONLINE
  • Mandatory Refresher: Under Reg. 84 of the Coal Mining Safety and Health Regulation 2017 (Qld), this competency must be refreshed at least every 5 years to remain compliant. (Note: OHSA offers a dedicated 1-day G2 Refresher program).

The G2 Risk Facilitator course is not an entry-level program. It is specifically designed for experienced resource sector workers stepping into—or currently holding—supervisory, leadership, or statutory roles within Queensland’s coal, metalliferous, and civil construction industries.

If you are responsible for identifying hazards, assessing unacceptable risks, and implementing rigid control measures under the Coal Mining Safety and Health Act 1999 or the Mining and Quarrying Safety and Health Act 1999, this training is mandatory.

THIS COURSE IS IDEAL FOR

  • Mining Supervisors & Superintendents (often taken alongside the S123 Mining Supervisor qualification)
  • Open Cut Examiners (OCEs) and other Statutory Position Holders
  • Leading Hands & Team Leaders stepping up into site management
  • Health and Safety Representatives (HSRs) and WHS Personnel
  • Site Safety Advisors overseeing JSEAs, WRACs, and Bow-Tie risk assessments
  • Contractors & Project Managers needing to meet specific Site Senior Executive (SSE) compliance requirements before commencing work on a QLD mine site

Important Note on Experience: Because this is a highly practical, compliance-driven course, individuals must have relevant experience in a resource sector workplace. You will need access to a live site, documentation, and a supervisor/manager to successfully complete the mandatory post-course portfolio of evidence.

What You Will Learn – RIIRIS402E Carry out the Risk Management Processes

The G2 Risk Facilitator program goes far beyond basic textbook theory. This intensive, highly practical course covers the end-to-end lifecycle of site safety and risk management in compliance with Queensland’s Coal Mining Safety and Health Act 1999 and Mining and Quarrying Safety and Health Act 1999.

Unlike basic online courses, our curriculum ensures you can confidently step onto a site and actively lead risk management processes.

WHAT WILL YOU LEARN

  • Determine and Scope the Risk Management Process: Understand statutory obligations, identify key stakeholders, and define the parameters for safe work on site.
  • Identify Hazards and Assess Risk: Go beyond basic hazard spotting. Learn to utilise advanced, industry-standard assessment tools such as WRAC (Workplace Risk Assessment and Control), Bow-Tie analysis, and JSEAs.
  • Identify Unacceptable Risk: Evaluate risk severity and likelihood to determine unacceptable levels of exposure before an incident occurs.
  • Implement the Hierarchy of Controls: Decide on, facilitate, and implement robust corrective actions and critical control measures to mitigate site hazards effectively.
  • Review and Audit Safety Implementations: It is not enough to just put a control in place. You will learn to conduct thorough safety inspections, audit the risk management process, and review the ongoing effectiveness of your actions.
  • Complete Statutory Records and Reports: Master the documentation required by Site Senior Executives (SSEs) and mining inspectors, ensuring all records comply with the strict guidelines of the Coal Mining Safety and Health Regulation 2017 (Qld).

The OHSA Practical Advantage: To finalise your competency, this course includes a post-course portfolio of evidence. You will take what you learn in the classroom and apply it directly to your site. By submitting facilitated risk assessments, safety inspections, and an audit report from your actual workplace, you prove to employers that you are operationally ready.

Course Requirements & Prerequisites

To ensure every participant meets the high compliance standards of the Queensland Coal Mining Safety and Health Act 1999 and is genuinely site-ready, there are mandatory prerequisites to enrol in the G2 Risk Facilitator course.

  • Students should have basic English literacy for reading and understanding course materials. They should also have sufficient literacy and numeracy to read and understand workplace safety instructions. The training and assessment will be delivered and assessed in English. Please contact us in advance if you have any language, literacy, or numeracy issues.
  • Post-Course task, students will need access to a computer or suitable device to undertake the online post-course task, a good internet connection, and reasonable computer literacy to read information from different online sources and enter answers into an online learning management system.

PRIOR COMPETENCY

It is recommended that students have completed RIIRIS301E  Apply risk management processes (commonly known as the S1 or G1), an equivalent qualification or have a strong risk management understanding prior to undertaking this course.

Because OHSA provides practical, real-world training, you must have access to a resource work site to complete the post-course portfolio of evidence.

  • Submission Timeline: The post-course work portfolio evidence must be submitted within 6 weeks of attendance at the face-to-face course.
  • Extensions: You may then wish to request in writing a maximum extension of a further 6 weeks, which is granted at the discretion of the OHSA assessor.
  • Important Note for Off-Site Workers: If you are no longer employed at a resource project or cannot access a recent supervisor/manager or site documentation, you may need to reconsider taking this course via our online/distance learning mode.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

  • What is a G2 Risk Facilitator in mining? A Risk Facilitator (often referred to as a “G2”) is a specialised site leader responsible for guiding teams through critical risk management processes. They lead discussions to identify workplace hazards, assess unacceptable risks, and develop robust safety responses, such as WRACs and JSEAs, to protect workers and maintain statutory compliance.
  • Is the RIIRIS402E Carry out the risk management process mandatory for QLD mine supervisors? Yes. For many supervisory and leadership roles, completing the RIIRIS402E Carry out the risk management process unit is a statutory requirement, as determined by the Queensland Mining Safety & Health Advisory Committees. It ensures you meet the strict risk management obligations under both the Coal Mining Safety and Health Act 1999 and the Mining and Quarrying Safety and Health Act 1999.
  • What is the difference between the S123 (Mining Supervisor) and the G2? The S123 Mining Supervisor course is the foundational requirement for supervisors, focusing on applying site risk management processes. The G2 is an advanced qualification focused on carrying out and facilitating those processes. Most Site Senior Executives (SSEs) in QLD require supervisors to hold both qualifications.
  • How often do I need to refresh my G2 training in Queensland? Under Section 84 of the QLD Coal Mining Safety and Health Regulation 2017, the Site Senior Executive (SSE) must ensure that workers refresh their risk management training at least every 5 years. OHSA offers a dedicated 1-day G2 Refresher course to keep your competencies compliant.
  • Why does OHSA require a post-course portfolio of evidence? While some providers offer basic “tick-and-flick” online quizzes, OHSA requires a site-verified practical assessment to guarantee you are genuinely site-ready. By submitting real-world evidence (like a facilitated risk assessment and safety inspection) signed off by your site manager, you prove to current and future employers that your qualification holds real operational weight.
  • What if I am between swings or not currently working on a mine site? If you are no longer employed at a resource project, cannot access site documentation, or do not have a supervisor to sign off on your practical portfolio, don’t stress. Contact our team to discuss taking this course via our flexible online/distance learning mode, which accommodates off-site workers.
  • Does this course cover both Coal and Metalliferous mining? Yes. The G2 unit of competency applies to both surface and underground coal mining, as well as metalliferous (hard rock) mining and quarrying operations across Queensland and Australia.
  • What previous qualifications do I need before taking the G2? To enrol in the G2 Risk Facilitator program, you must already hold the national competency unit for applying risk management processes. This is usually RIIRIS301E  Apply risk management processes (commonly known as the S1 or G1).
  • Can I bundle my G2 with my Standard 11 and S123 training? Absolutely. For operators stepping up into leadership, OHSA offers a premium 5-Day Supervisor Package. This allows you to complete your Standard 11, Mining Supervisor S123, and G2 back-to-back over 5 consecutive days (Monday to Friday, running every second week).
  • How long do I have to submit my site evidence portfolio? Your post-course work portfolio must be submitted within 6 weeks of attending your face-to-face course. If you need more time due to shift rosters or site access issues, you can request a maximum extension of a further 6 weeks in writing, subject to approval by your OHSA assessor.
  • Is the RIIRIS402E the same as older G2 qualifications like the RIIRIS402D? Yes. The RIIRIS402E – Carry out the risk management process is the most current, nationally recognised unit of competency. It officially supersedes and replaces all older iterations of the G2 qualification, including the RIIRIS402D and RIIRIS402A, ensuring your training meets the latest industry and legislative standards.
