The Standard 11 (S11) Surface Mining Induction

(Correctly known as the Generic OHS Induction from Appendix 3 in the Qld Government Department of Resources Recognised Standard 11 – Training in Coal Mines) It is a required course for new starters to work in a mine in Queensland.

OHSA is one of the largest and most regular providers of this course. This course exceeds the requirements of most other interstate mining induction requirements (however, you should always check first with the mine about any specific requirements they may have).

This course covers both coal and metalliferous mines. The Standard 11 Mine Safety Induction (Surface) course is delivered face-to-face over 2 days or the 1 day (blended/online with pre course work), whereby upon successful completion of the written and practical assessments during the course, you will be issued with a Statement of Attainment for the relevant units of competency and a plastic ID card which, according to the Qld Coal Mining Safety and Health Regulation must be refreshed at least every 5 years.

This 2-day F2F course or the 1-day blended/online course is run regularly in-house and is open to the public. We also provide the Standard 11 Surface Mining induction RPL, the Standard 11 Surface Mining Induction Refresher, and the Standard 11 Surface Mining Induction Online Refresher. It can be undertaken in Brisbane, the Gold Coast, and the Sunshine Coast during weekdays and weekends. We also run in-house training upon request.

Those wishing to work underground must take the elective 1 Day Standard 11 Underground course, which also offers the Standard 11 Underground induction RPL, Standard 11 Underground Mining Induction Refresher, and Standard 11 Underground Mining Induction Online Refresher as a Self-Paced.

Queensland has approximately 53 operating coal mines producing 280M Tonnes (2021), with many advanced projects in planning, which can be located in this list of Operating Coal Mines and Advanced Coal Projects.

BLENDED/ONLINE OPTION

To successfully complete the 1 Day with pre-course online blended, students will need access to a computer or suitable device to undertake online training and assessment, computer or device speakers, a good internet connection, and reasonable computer literacy to read information from different online sources and enter answers into an online learning management system.  If students do not have the necessary resources or computer literacy, we recommend they book into our two-day face-to-face course.

HOW LONG DOES THE BLENDED/ONLINE OPTION STANDARD 11 INDUCTION TAKE?

  • Blended/Online Option: 1 day of face-to-face practical training, plus approximately 4 to 6 hours online pre-course study that must be completed beforehand.

Upon completion of the online component, students will be awarded a ”badge” (certificate) through the online learning management system to show they have completed the online component.

Before attending the face-to-face practical portion, students must show the trainer/assessor evidence that they have successfully completed the online theory component in its entirety.  Students will be sent away from the course if they can not show evidence that they have completed all the online assessment tasks.

* BMA sites require students to hold a Statement of Attainment for the six (6) units of competency, listed in the Queensland Government Department of Resources’ Recognised Standard 11 for Surface Coal Mines, to attend their own Induction Process. This course provides the required Statement of Attainment. Due to occasional changes and additional site requirements, we always encourage anyone considering enrolling in any of our courses to check first with the respective mine site.

*OHSA Corporate Account Holders can get up to 15% for group bookings. For more information about our Corporate Accounts and application, go to http://www.ohsa.com.au/corporate-membership/application/

Who Should Take the Standard 11 Mining Induction?

If you are planning to step foot on a surface mine in Queensland, this mandatory safety training is for you. The Standard 11 Mining Induction is specifically designed to prepare workers for the unique hazards of the resource sector.

This course is ideal for:

  • Brand New Entrants: Anyone looking to kickstart a career in Queensland’s coal or metalliferous surface mining operations.
  • Contractors and Tradespeople: Electricians, mechanics, boilermakers, operators, and labourers who require clearance to work on an active mine site.
  • Returning Miners: Experienced workers whose previous induction certification has expired and who need to re-enter the industry.

Whether you are a highly skilled contractor transitioning into mining or a complete beginner preparing for your first swing, holding a formally recognised Generic OHS Induction is a strict legal and site requirement before commencing work.

What You Will Learn: Course Content

To successfully complete your Standard 11 Mining Induction, you must demonstrate competency across several critical safety areas. This comprehensive training ensures you are fully prepared for the daily hazards of a surface mine.

Specifically, the program covers the six mandatory units of competency required for Queensland surface coal and metalliferous mines:

  • RIICOM201E Communicate in the workplace: Learn how to effectively use site communication systems, protocols, and two-way radios.
  • RIIGOV201E Comply with site work processes/procedures: Understand the strict legal frameworks, site rules, and compliance procedures you must follow.
  • RIIWHS201E Work safely and follow WHS policies and procedures: Discover how to maintain a safe working environment for yourself and your crew.
  • RIIRIS201E Conduct local risk control: Gain the essential skills to identify, assess, and safely manage on-site hazards.
  • RIIERR205D Apply initial response First Aid: Master basic life support, CPR, and emergency casualty care. (Tip: Consider bundling this with our comprehensive Senior First Aid course!)
  • RIIERR302E Respond to local emergencies and incidents: Learn the correct protocols for fires, evacuations, and complex mine site emergencies.

Upon successfully finishing these six core units, you will receive your official Statement of Attainment. Consequently, you will be fully certified and ready to tackle the specific site inductions required by your employer.

To enrol in the Standard 11 Surface Mining Induction course, participants must:

  • Be 18 years or older
  • Hold a valid photo ID; students must provide photographic identification (e.g., driver’s licence, passport, etc.).
  • Students should have basic English literacy for reading and understanding course materials. They should also have sufficient literacy and numeracy to read and comprehend instructions for safety at the workplace. The training and assessment will be delivered and assessed in English. Please contact us in advance if you have any language, literacy, or numeracy issues.
  • Be physically fit to participate in practical mining safety exercises safely. Students will need sufficient physical ability to attend this classroom-based course, perform uninterrupted CPR for 2 minutes on a mannequin on the floor, and lift and carry an approximate 10-12kg fire extinguisher to extinguish a fire.
  • Blended, students will need access to a computer or suitable device to undertake online training and assessment, computer or device speakers, a good internet connection, and reasonable computer literacy to read information from different online sources and enter answers into an online learning management system.  If students do not have the necessary resources or computer literacy, we recommend they book into our two-day face-to-face course.
  • Closed shoes must be worn during the practical exercises.

VISA STATUS

Students must not be on a student visa or be the partner of someone on a student visa.

FITNESS FOR DUTY & CLASSROOM POLICY

Safety starts in the classroom. No student will be permitted to undertake the course or any session if they are impaired. This includes being under the influence of alcohol, illegal/illicit substances, or experiencing impairment from prescribed medication, or severe fatigue.

Please contact the office at 1300 647 200 if you wish to discuss any learning support you may need during the course.  If you have satisfactorily completed Grade 10 and can navigate online banking and streaming services (e.g. Netflix), you should be able to complete the requirements for the Standard 11 Blended or Face-to-Face course. Our office staff can provide more information if needed.

  • What is a Standard 11 induction? The Standard 11 (S11) Surface Mining Induction (formally known as the Generic OHS Induction) is a mandatory safety training course required for all new starters working in Queensland mines. Regulated by the Qld Government Department of Resources, this induction covers essential safety procedures and risk control for both coal and metalliferous surface mining operations.
  • How long does the Standard 11 induction take? The Standard 11 induction can be completed in two ways:
    Standard Face-to-Face: A 2-day classroom-based practical and theory program.
Blended/Online Option: 1 day of face-to-face practical training, plus approximately 4 to 6 hours online pre-course study that must be completed beforehand.
  • Is the OHSA Standard 11 induction BMA Compliant? Upon successful completion, you will receive a Statement of Attainment for the six (6) specific units of competency required to attend any specific additional inductions, for example, BMA. (Note: We always encourage checking with your specific mine site for any additional, site-specific requirements.)
  • Where is the course held? Training is conducted in Brisbane, Gold Coast, and Sunshine Coast. This course can also be delivered as an in-house option.
  • Do I receive a certificate? Yes, participants receive a Statement of Attainment upon successful completion.
  • Can I take this course online? This is a face-to-face course due to practical safety training requirements, but we offer an online 1-Day* Blended option training for those who can not attend the 2 Day Course F2F
  • What happens if I don’t satisfactorily complete the Standard 11 online assessment? For the 1-day Blended course, you must successfully complete the online theory component in its entirety before attending the practical session. If, for some reason, you are unsuccessful or cannot provide evidence that you have completed all online assessment tasks, you will not be permitted to participate in the practical training and will be sent home from the course. If you are not confident with computers or online learning, we highly recommend enrolling in the full 2-day face-to-face course instead.
