OHSA is one of the largest providers of the INDUSTRY-RECOGNISED ‘Standard 11 Generic OH&S Induction,’ which is the training identified by the Queensland Mining Inspectorate for new starters to work on a mine in Queensland. The Standard 11 Mining Induction exceeds most other State mining general safety induction requirements.

We deliver this recognised 1-day underground elective mining induction course usually every Wednesday (or we can come to your site) after the 2-day Standard 11 Surface induction in Brisbane.

This course covers both coal and metalliferous mines. The Standard 11 Mine Safety Induction (Underground) course is delivered face-to-face over one day. Upon successful completion of the written and practical assessments during the course, you will receive a Statement of Completion and a plastic Standard 11 Induction photo ID card enabling you to commence work on the mine site.

In addition to the training component of the mine induction, students will be required to complete a mine on-site verification workbook within 6 months of the training (check with the employer/mine as some only give 3 months) and return it to us with 3 tags and 3 personal risk assessments. On successful completion of the on-site verification workbook, students will be issued with a Statement of Attainment for the relevant unit of competency, in addition to their full ID card, which, at this stage, lasts for 5 years.

See our training calendar to find the next course at your location. We also offer a 5-day workers package, which includes Standard 11, Work at Heights, Confined Spaces and Senior First Aid over 5 consecutive days from Monday to Friday or Wednesday to Sunday weekly. Supervisors can choose to do the 5-day supervisors package, which includes Standard 11, Mining Supervisor S123 and G2 over 5 consecutive days, Monday to Friday or Wednesday to Sunday.

ATTENTION: OHSA offers a 5-day program for your Standard 11 Mining Induction, Mining Supervisor S123, and the G2 courses. Contact our office at 1300 647 200 and save!

Is Underground Mining Safe?

The truth is that mining still poses potential risks There are major accidents all over the world each and every year. And these accidents may have many causes.

What is underground mining?

Underground mining involves excavating paths and rooms beneath the Earth’s surface. It’s used when mineral deposits, or ore bodies, are located deep within the crust, and companies cannot easily access them from the ground. These operations require a lot of preparation, as numerous safety measures must be taken.

What is the difference between surface mining and underground mining?

The mining industry today primarily uses surface and underground excavation. Surface mining becomes unsuitable below 60m (200ft), so drilling operations must adjust accordingly.

Usually, a team of skilled miners blasts a hole into the rock to reach ore deposits deep within the Earth rather than openly at the surface. Once paths are made, they are secured and prepped to support the weight, maintaining the surrounding environment.

Underground mining is more expensive than surface mining because of foundational necessities like tunnel excavation, vent filtration, and mining shafts that must be put in place. These are precautions against things like noxious gases and help those working below.

STUDENT TESTIMONIALS

I recently completed the training with Richard, absolutely a top bloke. His teaching was exceptional. He presented the material in a way that was much more interesting than I expected, and the class interactions he facilitated were particularly helpful. I appreciate the effort he put into making the course enjoyable and educational, strongly recommend!
