Course Description

The Standard 11 Refresher program allows experienced mining professionals to update their safety qualifications efficiently and return to work faster. We developed this specific half-day course to meet strict Mining Legislation requirements, which mandate that resource sector workers refresh their core mining competencies at least every five years.

QUEENSLAND MINING INSPECTORATE RECOGNISED TRAINING

OHSA stands proudly as one of the largest and most trusted providers of the industry-recognised ‘Standard 11 Generic OH&S Induction’. The Queensland Mining Inspectorate explicitly identifies this training standard as critical for anyone working on a Queensland mine.

Our comprehensive refresher program fully covers the hazards and protocols for both coal and metalliferous surface mines. In fact, completing this updated training often exceeds the general safety induction requirements found in most other Australian states. To read more about state-specific safety compliance, you can visit the Queensland Government’s mining safety regulations page.

FLEXIBLE & ACCESSIBLE TRAINING OPTIONS

We respect your time and operational schedule. OHSA regularly delivers this recognised half-day mining induction course face-to-face in Brisbane to ensure you get the practical assessment you need without wasting days in a classroom.

You can easily check our training calendar to find the next available public course in your location. Alternatively, if you manage a large crew that requires bulk renewals, we can arrange dedicated, in-house delivery at your facility.

Do you regularly send staff for training? We encourage you to apply for our Corporate Accounts program, where account holders can secure up to 15% off group bookings.

Who is this course for?

This refresher program is designed exclusively for experienced mining personnel who need to renew their competencies to maintain site access. Because this is a fast-tracked, half-day course, you must meet specific evidentiary and eligibility requirements to attend.

This course is for individuals who meet the following criteria:

  • Hold Prior Certification: You must possess a previous Standard 11 Surface Mining Induction Card and a Statement of Attainment issued by a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) dated within the last 5 years.
  • Can Prove Recent Experience: You must provide clear evidence of attendance at mine sites over the previous 5 years. Sufficient evidence includes payslips, letters of appointment, site transcripts, site inductions, site cards, or a letter of testimony from your employer or manager.
  • Meet Age Requirements: Participants must be 18 years of age or older to enrol in any of our nationally accredited safety training programs.
  • Meet Visa Requirements: Students must not be on a student visa, nor can they be the partner of someone on a student visa.

What if my certification is older than 5 years? If your previous Standard 11 Surface Mining Induction Card and Statement of Attainment have expired for more than 5 years, you may still be eligible to take the refresher. In this case, you must provide sufficient evidence of active work experience or site visits in the resources sector from within the past 12 months.

Course Content

The Standard 11 Refresher ensures your knowledge of site safety protocols remains current and compliant with mining legislation, which requires mining competencies to be refreshed at least every 5 years. This half-day program provides a rapid review of the critical safety frameworks required for surface coal and metalliferous mines.

The course is divided into a review of theoretical knowledge and hands-on practical assessments to guarantee you can safely handle real-world mining hazards.

CORE SAFETY COMPETENCIES

During the refresher, our trainers will review and assess your knowledge across the six mandatory units of competency:

  • RIICOM201E Communicate in the workplace: Refresh your ability to effectively use site communication systems, protocols, and two-way radios.
  • RIIGOV201E Comply with site work processes/procedures: Review the strict legal frameworks, site rules, and compliance procedures you must follow.
  • RIIWHS201E Work safely and follow WHS policies and procedures: Revisit how to maintain a safe working environment for yourself and your crew.
  • RIIRIS201E Conduct local risk control: Update your essential skills to identify, assess, and safely manage on-site hazards.
  • RIIERR205D Apply initial response First Aid: Review basic life support, CPR, and emergency casualty care.
  • RIIERR302E Respond to local emergencies and incidents: Go over the correct protocols for fires, evacuations, and complex mine site emergencies.
  • Practical Assessment Exercises

Because mining safety requires physical capability, you will also complete hands-on demonstrations. Participants must have sufficient physical ability to attend the classroom-based course and perform the following exercises:

  • First Aid & CPR: Perform CPR floor demonstration exercises.
  • Fire Fighting: Lift and carry an approximately 10kg fire extinguisher to safely extinguish a simulated fire.

Course Requirements

Before enrolling in the Standard 11 Surface Mining Induction Refresher course, you must meet several mandatory prerequisites set by mining legislation and training standards. Please review these requirements carefully to ensure a smooth enrolment process.

MANDATORY DOCUMENTATION & PREREQUISITES

To take the refresher program instead of the full course, you must present valid documentation proving your past qualification and recent industry experience:

  • Prior Certification: You must hold a previous Standard 11 Surface Mining Induction Card and Statement of Attainment issued by a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) within the past 5 years.
  • Proof of Site Experience: You must provide clear evidence of mine site attendance over the past 5 years. Accepted documents include payslips, site transcripts, site cards, site inductions, letters of appointment, or signed letters of testimony from your manager or employer.
  • Requirements for Expired Cards (>5 Years): If your Standard 11 card and Statement of Attainment are older than 5 years, you can still enrol in the refresher. However, you must provide proof of active work experience or site visits in the resources sector within the past 12 months.
  • Unique Student Identifier (USI): You must supply a valid USI number during enrolment. If you do not have one, you can easily create or find your number via the official Australian Government USI Registry System.
  • Valid Photo Identification: You must bring an original, valid photographic ID (such as a current driver’s licence or passport) to your training session.

PHYSICAL FITNESS & AGE LIMITS

Mining safety requires physical capability during emergency response demonstrations. Participants must meet the following criteria:

  • Age Limit: You must be 18 years of age or older. We do not enrol students under 18.
  • Physical Ability: You must have sufficient physical fitness to perform continuous CPR on a floor-based mannequin and carry an approximate 10kg fire extinguisher to extinguish a fire.
  • Literacy & Numeracy: You must possess basic English reading, writing, and numeracy skills to comprehend workplace safety instructions, risk assessments, and emergency procedures.

CLOTHING & VISA RESTRICTIONS

  • Required PPE: You must wear closed-in shoes to the course. Additionally, you must bring a long-sleeved shirt to wear during the practical firefighting exercise.
  • Visa Status: Students holding a student visa (or dependent partners on a student visa) cannot enrol in this course.
