The BSB51319 Diploma of Work Health and Safety contains the following 10 units of competency: 

  • BSBWHS512 Contribute to managing work-related psychological health and safety
  • BSBWHS513 Lead WHS risk management
  • BSBWHS514 Manage WHS compliance of contractors
  • BSBWHS515 Lead initial response to and investigate WHS incidents
  • BSBWHS516 Contribute to developing, implementing and maintaining an organisation’s WHS management system
  • BSBWHS519 Lead the development and use of WHS risk management tools
  • BSBWHS520 Manage implementation of emergency procedures*
  • BSBWHS522 Manage WHS consultation and participation processes
  • BSBWHS417 Assist with managing WHS implications of return to work*
  • BSBWHS419 Contribute to implementing WHS monitoring processes*

 * Any student who has successfully completed the full BSB41415/ BSB41419 Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety through OHSA will have already completed three of the elective units, meaning they will only have to complete 7 units to be awarded the BSB51319 Diploma of Work Health and Safety.

Diploma of Work Health and Safety BSB51319 will provide students with a safety qualification, enabling the graduate to fulfil the role of WHS Officer/Supervisor or Manager in an organisation. This qualification builds on what students have learned in Certificate IV in WHS qualification.

Course pre-requisite:  Students must have at least the five core units from BSB41419 Certificate IV in WHS or units deemed equivalent. See course requirements for more information.

This qualification is suitable for people who coordinate and maintain an organisation’s Work Health and Safety (WHS) program. It also reflects the role of practitioners who apply a substantial knowledge base and well-developed skills in a wide variety of WHS contexts.

The course is housed on a learning management system. It is self-paced and, if required, supported by a trainer via email or phone. The course must be completed within 18 months of enrolment.

For those wishing to examine Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), please contact the office to make an enquiry. We will need to see a large amount of recent workplace evidence that can be verified as your own work; however, we can provide more information upon inquiry. An extra administration fee may be payable for mapping evidence against the unit of competency requirements.

The BSB51319 Diploma of Work Health and Safety, available face to face in Gold Coast and Brisbane and online Australia-wide, contains ten (10) competencies and are all completed at the pace of the student, with a maximum period of 18 months to complete the qualification. Each unit has specific learning outcomes and is structured for self-paced learning. Upon completion of each unit, students are to submit the assessment tasks for marking via the learning management system (LMS).

You must satisfy the following prerequisite requirements:

Mandatory entry requirements:

  • 5 core units from BSB41419 OR BSB41415 Certificate IV in WHS

Plus

  • Language, literacy, and numeracy are required for diploma level and computer skills, e.g., basic word processing and the ability to access internet resources.
  • It is also recommended that you have prior experience in a safety role, which includes the development and review of safety systems.

The preferred pathway into qualification includes the achievement of BSB41419 Certificate IV in WHS or equivalent.

A strong internet connection is required to complete this course. As the course is purely online, students will need to film/record themselves carrying out some tasks that require an oral communication skills assessment. This includes holding team meetings, presenting information to others, or other brief verbal communication tasks that will be required to be uploaded as directed during the assessment in the LMS.

All online courses require participants to sign a declaration upon completion to certify that they completed the course independently.

The total hours needed to achieve the BSB51319 Diploma of Work Health and Safety may vary depending on individual background and experience, but all learners must meet all the requirements as outlined in each unit of competency.

The following is a guide to assist students in determining their completion timeframe. Based on the approximate 450 hours spent studying, approx 16 hours/week = 6 months to complete the post-course, 8 hours/week = 1 year, and 6 hours/week = 1.5 years or 18 months.
