This OHSA Refresher Course meets the requirements for the position of a Supervisor in the Resources Industry as per s.56 of the Coal Mining Safety and Health Act 1999 and s.51 of the Mining and Quarrying Safety and Health Act 1999 and are recognised by both Coal Mining Safety and Health Advisory Committee and the Mining Safety and Health Advisory Committee. These competencies are required to be refreshed at least every 5 years as per Reg. 84 of the Coal Mining Safety and Health Regulation 2017 (Qld).
The course comprises three units of competency, which have been specified by the Coal and Metalliferous Mining Safety and Health Advisory Boards for any person authorised to supervise workers in a mine. OHSA offers an online/distance learning option for this refresher program, which requires a theory assessment and submission of a portfolio of workplace evidence and activities. OHSA can also deliver this course as a 1-day face-to-face course at your workplace if preferred.
‘Morning Simon….you and Chris have inspired me with the great courses given by you both..” G.T. – General Superintendent – Ostwald Bros. (Mining Supervisor and G2 Student).
The course is structured to ensure the learner has the skills and knowledge to meet the requirements of the 3 units of competency, including:

If you are no longer employed at a resources project or cannot get access to a recent supervisor/manager or site documentation, you may not be able to complete the necessary course requirements, such as getting the manager’s testimonials completed, getting access to your previously completed site documentation such as past meetings (pre-start etc) you have delivered, JSA’s / JHA’s etc you have participated in developing, incident reports you have completed etc.
Candidates will be required to complete a written theory assessment and submit a workplace evidence portfolio including various documentation including two (2) samples of risk assessments (i.e. JSA’s/JHA’s/SWMS etc) that the candidate has contributed to or developed, two (2) meetings (i..e pre-starts/tool boxes) they have delivered or chaired, two (2) incident reports they have completed or contributed to and some other workplace evidence activities, a manager’s testimonial, 100 points of ID, a statutory declaration and a copy of their previous certificate certified by a JP or Commissioner of Declarations.
Participants should have access to a suitable computer/internet/printer and sufficient internet skills for the online option and have the resources & capability to participate in video conferencing/webinars or Facetime interviews with the Trainer/Assessor (if required). Students should also be allocated sufficient time and resources to complete the course content, have access to a resources workplace, and be able to locate a Justice of the Peace or Commissioner of Declarations where Statutory Declarations.
While the course is self-paced, you will be given six (6) weeks to complete all of the assessment tasks, at which time your enrolment expires. You may then wish to request in writing an extension of a further period at the discretion of the OHSA assessor. There is no refund once you have enrolled in the course and received the course material from OHSA.
How long do I have to complete this course?
You have six (6) weeks to complete this course from the date you enrolled and received the course documentation from OHSA.
