This OHSA Refresher Course meets the requirements for the position of a Supervisor in the Resources Industry as per s.56 of the Coal Mining Safety and Health Act 1999 and s.51 of the Mining and Quarrying Safety and Health Act 1999 and are recognised by both Coal Mining Safety and Health Advisory Committee and the Mining Safety and Health Advisory Committee. These competencies are required to be refreshed at least every 5 years as per Reg. 84 of the Coal Mining Safety and Health Regulation 2017 (Qld).
The course comprises three units of competency which have specified by the Coal and Metalliferous Mining Safety and Health Advisory Boards for any person authorised to supervise workers on a mine. OHSA offers an online/distance learning option for this refresher program which requires a theory assessment and portfolio of workplace evidence and activities to be submitted. OHSA can also deliver this course as a 1 day face to face course at your workplace if preferred.

The course is structured to ensure the learner has the skills and knowledge to meet the requirements of the 3 units of competency including:
Participants must have completed a previous Mining Supervisor Course or equivalent within the past 5 years and hold a current Statement of Attainment (certified from a Justice of the Peace) issued by a Registered Training Organisation and should ideally already have access to a current resources (Coal, Metalliferous, Drilling, Exploration or Civil Infrastructure) workplace, site or project or recent experience (in the past 12 months) working in resources. If your Mining Supervisor certificate has expired and you can prove continuous employment in that capacity on a resources project you may still be able to enrol in this program providing you can provide sufficient evidence of current continuous employment in the supervisory role on a resources project.
Candidates must also have access to a current or recent supervisor / manager to provide third party supplementary manager testimonial of your demonstrated ability to carry out certain tasks as part of this course. If you are no longer employed at a resources project or cannot get access to a recent supervisor / manager or site documentation, you may not be able to complete the necessary course requirements such as getting manager’s testimonials completed, getting access to your previously completed site documentation such as past meetings (pre-start etc) you have delivered, jsa’s / jha’s etc you have participated in developing, incident reports you have completed etc.
Candidates will be required to complete a written theory assessment and submit workplace evidence portfolio including various documentation including: two (2) samples of risk assessments (i.e. JSA’s / JHA’s / SWMS etc) that the candidate has contributed to or developed , two (2) meetings (i..e pre-starts/tool boxes) they have delivered or chaired, two (2) incident reports they have completed or contributed to and some other workplace evidence activities, a manager’s testimonial, 100 points of ID, a statutory declaration and a copy of their previous certificate certified by a JP or Commissioner of Declarations.
Participants should have access to a suitable computer/internet/printer and sufficient internet skills for the online option and have the resources & capability to participate in video conferencing / webinars or Facetime interviews with the Trainer / Assessor (if required). Students should also be allocated sufficient time and resources to complete the course content and have access to a resources workplace and able to locate a Justice of the Peace or Commissioner of Declarations where Statutory Declarations.
Whilst the course is self paced you will be given six (6) weeks to complete all of the assessment tasks at which time your enrolment expires. You may then wish to request in writing an extension of a further period at the discretion of the OHSA assessor. There is no refund once you have enrolled into the course and received the course material from OHSA.
Q. How long do I have to complete this course?
A. You have six (6) weeks to complete this course from the date you have been enrolled and have been issued the course documentation from OHSA.
