This course meets the requirements for the position of a Supervisor in the Resources Industry as per s.56 of the Coal Mining Safety and Health Act 1999 and s.51 of the Mining and Quarrying Safety and Health Act 1999 and are recognised by both Coal Mining Safety and Health Advisory Committee and the Mining Safety and Health Advisory Committee.

The course comprises three units of competency which have specified by the Coal and Metalliferous Mining Safety and Health Advisory Boards for any person authorised to supervise workers on a mine. These competencies are required to be refreshed at least every 5 years as per Reg. 84 of the Coal Mining Safety and Health Regulation 2017 (Qld) – OHSA offers an online/distance learning option for this refresher option which requires a brief theory assessment and portfolio of workplace evidence and activities to be submitted. Supervisors can choose to do the 5 day supervisor’s package which includes the Standard 11, Mining Supervisor S123 and G2 over 5 consecutive days Monday to Friday or Wednesday to Sunday.

The course is structured to ensure the learner has the skills and knowledge to meet the requirements of the 3 units of competency including:

  • Risk management focusing on
    • the appropriate identification of hazards and analysis of risk
    • selection and implementation of control measures
    • use of risk management concepts to effectively supervise workers
  • Incident investigation focusing on
    • evidence gathering
    • appropriate analysis of information to identify immediate causes (contributing factors) and underlying (real) causes
    • making appropriate recommendations to reduce risk of a recurrence
  • Communicate information focusing on skills related to
    • supervising a team
    • delivering a shift meeting or toolbox talk
    • negotiating in the workplace

Candidates must have access to a current resources (Coal, Metalliferous, Drilling, Exploration or Civil Infrastructure) site / project / workplace or recent experience (in the past 12 months) working in resources and have access to a supervisor / manager to provide third party supplementary manager testimonial of your demonstrated ability to carry out certain tasks as part of this course. If you are no longer employed at a resources project or cannot get access to a recent supervisor / manager or site documentation, you may need to reconsider doing this course via online / distance learning mode as you will need to get access to completed site documentation such as past meetings (pre-start etc) you have delivered, jsa’s / jha’s etc you have participated in developing, incident reports you have completed etc.

Online / Distance Learning Course – Participants should have access to a suitable computer/internet/printer and sufficient internet skills for the online option and have the resources & capability to participate in video conferencing / webinars or Facetime interviews with the Trainer / Assessor (if required). Students should also be allocated sufficient time and resources to complete the course content and have current access to a resources workplace and have access to a Justice of the Peace or Commissioner of Declarations where Statutory Declarations are required to be submitted. Participants must also provide photographic identification (i.e. driver’s licence, passport). On-line courses and off-campus assessments will require students to complete a declaration that they completed the assessment themselves.

Course log-ins will be sent to the student after enrolment. If enrolment occurs after hours, on  weekend or Public Holidays course work will be provided the next business day.

Students must complete the course within six (6) weeks of receipt of enrolment and receipt of course paperwork from OHSA.
