This course is mandatory for mining industry supervisors. It meets the requirements for the position of Supervisor in the Resources Industry as per s.56 of the Coal Mining Safety and Health Act 1999 and s.51 of the Mining and Quarrying Safety and Health Act 1999 and is recognised by both the Coal Mining Safety and Health Advisory Committee and the Mining Safety and Health Advisory Committee.

The course comprises three units of competency, which have been specified by the Coal and Metalliferous Mining Safety and Health Advisory Boards for any person authorised to supervise workers in a mine. These competencies are required to be refreshed at least every 5 years as per Reg. 84 of the Coal Mining Safety and Health Regulation 2017 (Qld) – OHSA offers an online/distance learning option for this refresher option, which requires a brief theory assessment and portfolio of workplace evidence and activities to be submitted. Supervisors can choose to do the 5-day supervisor’s package, which includes Standard 11, Mining Supervisor S123 and G2 over 5 consecutive days, Monday to Friday or Wednesday to Sunday.

In Queensland, individuals in the mining industry who are appointed as supervisors or site safety and health representatives must hold the units of competency S123, also known as G189. This requirement is mandated by the Mining Safety and Health Advisory Committee.

The course is structured to ensure the learner has the skills and knowledge to meet the requirements of the 3 units of competency including:

• Risk management focusing on
  • the appropriate identification of hazards and analysis of risk
  • selection and implementation of control measures
  • use of risk management concepts to effectively supervise workers
• Incident investigation focusing on
  • evidence gathering
  • appropriate analysis of information to identify immediate causes (contributing factors) and underlying (real) causes
  • making appropriate recommendations to reduce risk of a recurrence
• Communicate information focusing on skills related to
  • supervising a team
  • delivering a shift meeting or toolbox talk
  • negotiating in the workplace

Candidates should ideally already have recent experience working in resources and hold the worker level mining induction (i.e. Standard 11 Mining General Safety Induction).

Online / Distance Learning Course – Participants should have access to a suitable computer/internet/printer and sufficient internet skills for the online option. Students should also be allocated sufficient time and resources to complete the course content and have current access to a resources workplace and have access to a Justice of the Peace or Commissioner of Declarations where Statutory Declarations are required to be submitted. Participants must also provide photographic identification (i.e. driver’s licence, passport). On-line courses and off-campus assessments will require students to complete a declaration that they completed the assessment themselves.

S123 is a mandated requirement for Site Supervisors and Site Safety Health Representatives (SSHR) in Queensland’s Resources Industry.

The course consists of 3 nationally accredited competencies that the Safety and Health Advisory Committees for Queensland’s resource sector have identified that these statutory roles need to hold.
